This is exactly what Jonas Weil did in the late nineteenth century. He was a Jewish immigrant from Lebanon, a country in the Middle East known for its cedar tree, history, corruption and instability. The population of this country, like many other European, Asian, African, or American nations, went to this country after the creation of the United States to fulfill their dream of a new homeland where they would be valued, where they would have rights and freedoms. Jonas Weil was among them in the late nineteenth century. After the death of his friend, he decided to help all the other poor and needy people from the Bronx by organizing a fundraiser for the Lebanese Association of Hospitals in New York. Bronx1.one will tell you more about this hospital, its history, staff and the emergency cases that have occurred here.

Toggle

History of hospitals in the Bronx

Hospital during World War II

Hospitals in the 50s and 60s of the twentieth century

Hospital emergencies

COVID-19 and the BronxCare Health System

History of hospitals in the Bronx

According to nytimes.com, the hospital, which is now known to everyone, especially Bronx residents, as BronxCare Health System, was formerly called the Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center, and before that the Lebanese Association of Hospitals. It was founded as a place for the treatment of Americans in 1893. Funds for the creation of such a center were provided by Jonas Weil, the founder and first president of the hospital (USD 10,175) and other philanthropists of the time. The hospital was built at the intersection of Westchester Avenue and 151st Street. In 1894, another unit called the School of Nursing was added to the hospital. Thus, there were more doctors, and this had a favorable effect on the treatment of the Bronx population, which was growing rapidly at that time. Although the hospital served mainly Jews, other people also came here for help. So it became an essential medical center for New Yorkers.

In 1911, 19 years after the Lebanese Association of Hospitals was founded, the Bronx Hospital was built. Its main goal was to enable the population of the growing New York City or its part, the Bronx, to solve their health problems. Already in 7 years of operation, it has provided services to 30 thousand patients. The hospital’s administration purchased a property on Fulton Avenue and located a 110-bed unit there. However, the population continued to grow, and by that time there was a need for 310 beds.

This is how two hospitals emerged in the Bronx in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. They would share a common history throughout the twentieth century. Let’s take a look at what is meant by that.

Hospital during World War II

In 1939, World War II broke out. In 1941, the United States entered the war. The Americans deployed their naval forces after the Japanese attack. Therefore, the administration of the Bronx Hospital thought about changing its location to have more opportunities to treat the military. The solution was found only in 1944 (according to other sources, in 1946). It moved to a building at Grand Concourse on Mount Eden Parkway. On June 8, 1944, The New York Times reported that Mayor Fiorello Henry La Guardia spoke at the opening of a military hospital in the Bronx at Grand Concourse on Mount Eden Parkway. Here he called on volunteers to help the wounded more, as the happiness and recovery of the U.S. Army depends on their work.

Hospitals in the 50s and 60s of the twentieth century

The 50s came, and the management of both hospitals decided that they should unite to fulfill their mission together. Thus, in 1962, the Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center was established, which had 2 divisions:

A 17-story building was built on the basis of the Lebanese Association of Hospitals and in the place where it was located, various medical services are provided.

On the territory of the building on Fulton Avenue, a hospital has appeared that helps patients with mental disorders and also trains nurses.

Hospital emergencies

The new hospital attracted thousands of patients. But some complained about the high prices and exorbitant salaries of some doctors and managers, like the hospital’s director, Miguel Fuentes, who earned seven figures a year.

In June 2017, a terrorist attack took place in a hospital that treats hundreds of thousands of patients a year from Africa, the Caribbean, South and Central America, with 972 rooms and about 4,000 employees from 40 countries: doctors, nurses, coffee shop workers, lottery ticket sellers and other staff. One of the hospital’s ex-employees, Henry Bello, who was fired for sexual harassment, bought an assault rifle and, entering the healthcare facility, killed another doctor and wounded six others. He then killed himself. This event united the hospital staff and allowed them to bond more closely.

In December 2017, the hospital changed its name from Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center to BronxCare Health System to stop being associated with the site of the terrorist attack and, in effect, start from scratch.

It is also worth mentioning that corruption used to be rampant in the hospital. This shameful phenomenon was even the subject of a federal investigation. The media reported that the mafia controlled the construction of the hospital facility, and some doctors even received rewards for each patient brought here.

COVID-19 and the BronxCare Health System

In 2019, the COVID-19 epidemic gripped the world and New York in particular. The hospital was at the forefront of the fight against the infectious threat. It was at this time that information emerged that BronxCare doctors were working without masks, face shields and gowns, which led to their infection with COVID-19. Some doctors at this hospital expressed concern that this situation endangered their lives as well as the lives of patients. This also affects their treatment: when there is a shortage of staff (1 nurse for 11 patients), it is difficult to help everyone at the same time. The doctors also noted that they could be fined for disclosing this confidential information. After all, Miguel Fuentes, who runs the hospital, earns huge amounts of money, while the hospital does not have the necessary means to protect doctors. Specifically, it was reported that he earned $4.8 million in 2008 and $1.7 million in 2015.

Dr. Sridhar Chilimuri, the chief physician at Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center, at a news conference.
